I'm a bit of a stickler for
researching my travels, especially cultural differences, and have found it
really pays off. On one of my first trips to Chiang Mai I made reservations at a
hotel that looked classy but comfortable. My 26 hour flight landed me in
Bangkok, but I was out of there the next morning and by early afternoon I was
standing in the hotel lobby, jetlagged and generally worn out. I announced by
name and reservation and I got a blank stare and was told no room. I started
over, sure they had misunderstood, but got the same reply; No Room. In other
parts of the world I might have drawn myself up and blasted them good, but,
remembering my studies, I put on my Thai smile and said, Oh, do you think you
can help me? In moments the manager, in her slick BMW, was hustling me to
another hotel for the night and got me back to her hotel the next day too. It is
a great hotel, (Palm Springs City Resort), I receive regular e-mails from my
