Byways of Thai Ways

Cowboy Jon

"World Cup Mania"

Although I have completely ignored the sport in the past, I now realize just how much the rest of the world loves it. A man of my generation, born in the states, just isn't into soccer. After all, we only had four sports at the school I went to, American football, baseball, basketball, and track. At least at the small schools, like the one I went to. So my whole life I completely ignored the game. This year I finally decided to watch because the U.S. was playing. I was fascinated by it, there is a lot of action, and of course the drama of everyone playing for their country added to it and made a very lively game. Since the U.S. got off to a good start I now to watch every game I can.

Now, the Thais, don't have a team playing but are so much in love with the game they don't miss a moment. They can't root for Thailand, as they aren't in it, but are pulling for any asian team, at the time of this writing that only leaves South Korea. They want any asian team to win and don't care about anything else. I guess it's like me pulling for the ST. Louis Rams to win the Super Bowl.

I still don't understand all the rules, but am trying to learn as I go. So far I think the U.S. team is far ahead of all expectations and I love it. I try to arrange my lunch hour around the early game and go home for the late game, it seems to work out well with my schedule. Of course my child bride is really into it and I have no problem tuning it in at night. I even have her rooting for the U.S.

They play Germany next, and of course, I have no idea who will prevail in that game. But, if they never win again this year, they will have made their mark and should be proud of it. At the begining, all I heard was jokes made about how bad the team was, now they same people say we were lucky. I wonder if maybe the attitude might change in the near future, I sort of think it will!

There are no games today, but tomorrow we have England vs Brazil as the early game and the U.S. vs Germany being the late game. Looks like it will be a busy day in front of the boob tube for me.

Most of my friends that I watch the early game with, are British, and they aren't ready to admit that they might be losing a bit of control over the world football, and still don't give much credit to the U.S. for their wins. Mostly they call it luck or whatever. I wonder what it would take to change their minds. Just maybe we will find out.

Tell you what, come watch the rest of the games with me and lets try to give all the help we can to assist our team to win! Enjoy the game and give the boys some support!
