PATTAYA VIEWS

By Charlie Brown

Having left BangkokAtoZ.com over a year ago, and now living in Pattaya, I have been asked to contribute some information on Pattaya for visitors to Thailand, and for expatriates living here. Our hope is to broaden the scope of information on the BangkokAtoZ.com website.

On my first entry this month, I want to talk a little about transportation, mainly the baht buses operating in Pattaya.  But first let me tell about getting here from Bangkok

Getting here from Bangkok:

There are several ways to get here, depending on how much you want to pay. The cheapest and most used are the buses that run from Sukhumvit Ekamai bus station located across from Sukhumvit Soi 63. The price is 90 baht one way, with buses leaving every half hour from 06:00 – 22:00 hrs. The trip takes about 2 hours, and the buses are air-conditioned.

For those arriving at Don Muang Airport, the same Bus Company operates, and the price is 110 baht. Also from the Airport, you can get metered taxi service, or airport limousine. This can run anywhere from 800 baht to 1500 baht, the cheaper being the metered taxis.

Most hotels offer mini-bus service, some free, some charging a reasonable amount. It's best to check with the hotel in which you are staying.

Further information: You can also make a deal with almost any metered taxi, bearing in mind the normal average is 800-900 baht.

In Pattaya:

If you come by bus, there are baht buses at the buss station that you make a deal to wherever you are going. Normally, if in the downtown Pattaya area, they charge 50-60 baht. If going on to Jomtien Beach, it will be 80-100 baht. The prices I quote are not gospel, but are the normal average.

Traveling around town:

The most popular and available way is by baht bus. However, there are motorcycle taxies, but I don’t recommend them unless you are very adventurous. Baht buses run just about everywhere, and are cheap. In the downtown, South Pattaya area the run 5 baht anywhere between South Pattaya Rd. and Central Pattaya Rd. The same rate applies between Central and North Pattaya roads. Going over the hill from South Pattaya to Jomtien Beach will cost 10 baht.

All above are quoted on their normal runs, and you will share with others they pick up along the way. You can make a deal to take you direct to any location without sharing, but be prepared to pay a much higher price.

Do’s and don’ts:

“Do” remember, you are the visitor here, and even though I have given average amounts to pay, there are many baht bus drivers that think because we are farang -- foreigners -- it’s ok to charge us more than what you see the Thais pay. For instance, if you know it should be 5 baht for the short ride, but you only have a 20 baht bill, be prepared for the driver to start driving off without giving change. You may object in a nice way if this happens, and maybe they will give you change, but don’t count on it.

“Do not” get into an argument with them. Believe it or not, these guys are a Mafia, and you will find yourself surrounded in short order.

All along beach road you can find motorcycles, Jeeps, or cars to rent, as well at as many other locations in town. Motorcycles can run as cheap as 100 baht/day, and Jeeps start from 500 baht/day.

Hope this helps, and that you enjoy your visit here.

Bye for now.
