Rainy Season Continues Late This Year American Thanksgiving in Washington Square A Most Excellent Travel Agency Jukebox Club, New Bar on Sukhumvit Road * * * * * * * * * * Just a reminder you can sign-up for free to receive the BangkokAtoZ.com Updates (plain text) e-mail to always know when I add something new to the site or modify it in some important way. A great way to be sure YOU don't miss something of interest, best of all is that this service is absolutely FREE! * * * * * * * * * * You know, one of the pleasures of having an open space is the feedback. Unfortunately, sometimes the feedback is hardly positive. I was very sick the two Fridays I missed. Nothing serious. But about the last thing I wanted to do -- besides run a foot race! -- was to sit at the computer. I've had a lot of feedback from subscribers to my automatic e-mail notification service, a lot of good feedback, good both in the sense of encouraging and good in the sense of sound, constructive input regarding how best to satisfy the greatest number of people possible. This column is both abbreviated and contains old news, but it's meant to be a gap-filler until I do get another column up. * * * * * * * * * * Rainy Season Continues Late This Year Friday, November 18, 2005 The rainy season is running unusually late this year; it rained a bit here in the Washington Square just last night, and a few days ago we had heavy rain -- not the heaviest I've ever seen, but more than heavy enough, flooding parts of the city. But the weather has been pretty weird everywhere this year -- all the typhoons, hurricanes, and cyclones, plus odd temperature and precipitation patterns in many places. Let's all hope the rest of the year passes quietly, not only in terms of weather, but also other natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes! Late note December 2nd: The cool season started November 21st and continued for about 4 days before temperatures returned to a relatively moderate, but not cool, level. At their peak -- or is it valley -- temperatures dipped to about 20 degrees/70 degrees. * * * * * * * * * * American Thanksgiving in Washington Square Friday, November 18, 2005 This year's American Thanksgiving celebration falls on Thursday next week, November 24th. There will be quite a few places having feasts that day, such as many hotels and restaurants. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a good meal across a fairly wide price range. Many of the feasts are presented in all-you-can-eat buffets, with a variety of foods, not just traditional American holiday fare. (After all, not everyone likes turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie!) A good point to make, especially for newcomers to town who aren't American and aren't all that familiar with the tradition, though in the U.S. the focus is largely on American themes, Americans living abroad don't feel a sense of exclusiveness, instead welcoming anyone. (And if they don't, then what in the world are they doing living outside America???) To all who decide to celebrate the holiday, especially to my fellow Americans, Happy Thanksgiving! Late Note December 2nd: The holiday at the Texas Lone Staar Bar was excellent, thanks in no small part to, ahem, the fact I donated a ham for the occasion! (Bows all around.) * * * * * * * * * * A Most Excellent Travel Agency Friday, November 18, 2005 A friend of mine has been using a particular local travel agency for quite awhile, and he has been extremely happy with it -- and he travels quite a lot in his work. About 4 months ago I decided to give the folks there a try. After having used them 3 times now, I can attest to my buddy's high opinion of the travel agents at KSK Travel. These people are great. For those of us who speak English but don't speak Thai, it's lucky the staff speak very good English. All of the ladies who work there are very friendly and, more importantly, excellent at their jobs. For those who hold American Express cards, you can make your arrangements over the telephone, pay, and have the air tickets or whatever delivered to your location (within reason, of course). I don't know which other credit cards they accept other than they do accept Visa, which I know since I used mine to pay for a ticket just today. Actually, it doesn't have to be a credit card, but can be a debit card. They also offer competitive prices. For example, the ticket I bought today is for a Bangkok-Hongkong-Bangkok flight. I checked numerous airlines online, and the best price I could find was north of 12,000 baht (and fares ran as high as a rather ridiculous 21,000 baht -- for not much more than that I can fly all the way to the west coast of North America!). The fare I paid today was 8,900 baht plus 3% for using my Visa card, for a grand total of 9,167 baht -- very competitive indeed. That fare is for an economy-class seat on China Airline, which I've never flown but about which I've been hearing good things for many years. The KSK Travel website has a page to book air tickets online -- but I couldn't get to that page today. Maybe it's down temporarily. If it is restored, there sure are some great fares there. If you're looking for a good local travel agency here, consider trying this one. It's located on the ground floor of the Top Inn, which is immediately west of the Landmark Hotel and slightly east of Soi Nana (Sukhumvit Soi 4). The agency is immediately inside the door of the hotel. KSK Travel * * * * * * * * * * Enough for one go . . . Until next time -- Mekhong Kurt
